Lord Shiva performed the Tandav after killing the demon Vrittassura and it was a happening that existence had never before witnessed. The elephant headed God Ganesh held the beat on the tabla and when Shiva danced time and space ceased to exist. There was a whirlwind of light and energy spinning faster and faster with every beat consuming everything that was dark, destroying everything that was evil.He was pure energy pulsating through the entire cosmos and when his energy reached the peak of conciousness his third eye opened with such an immense force that every living cell in this universe was blinded by the light bursting out of his forehead.
Bramha the creator of music also created humans. The early humans lived in caves. Nature fulfilled their desires of hunger and thirst, fire protected them from wild beasts and as man evolved he came to realize that nature was a far greater force with a limitless abundancy to create, nurture and protect and out of his reverence for these forces of nature started the whole concept of prayer.

Thus music on earth contained a soul. There were Ragas for every festivity, every occasion, every celebration. There were Ragas to please Gods and forces of nature and ragas to contemplate love, longing and separation. The music had a great divinity, a great spirituality to it.
With time the Barter system gained a stronghold on mankind. This lead to commerce and chaos. Chaos- because with the evolution of commerce man started quantifying everything he possessed as a means to gain. Knowingly or unknowingly music and dance were caught in this whirlwind of commercialization.Music started becoming more of a source of entertainment to humans and less of a ritual. It became more of a seductive means to earn wealth and less of a prayer, a gratefulness and indebtedness.
Today music is no longer a means of reflecting gratefulness. The idea of music as a ritual is becoming outcast.Music gurus charge huge sums of money to impart this divine knowledge. It has become merely a source of income and alas! has lost its soul!!
